See you soon :-(

New postponement for 30th FESCAAAL 2020.

Hope to see you soon!

Driven by optimism and hope, necessary also to give a meaning to the great work done by all the staff so far, we hoped until the very last to be able to respect the new dates of May for the thirtieth African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival. We are very sorry but, obviously, it will not be possible”

Due to the continuing COVID-19 emergency, the 30th edition of the African, Asian and Latin American Film Festivalcannot be held from  2ndto 10thMay  as previously announced but, if there appear to be the conditions necessary for it to be held, it will be postponed to autumn 2020 on a date to be defined. The measures in force on limiting movement, physical distancing and above all, the closure of the places of culture, contained in the last decree which do not allow announcing certain dates for the next edition.

Alongside the film programme, all the special initiatives scheduled on the 30thanniversary of FESCAAAL are also postponed: the “Women on the verge of changing the world” section, in collaboration with Milan City Council – Department of Networks and Cultural Cooperation,  AfricaTalks 2020 in collaboration with Fondazione EDU and the calendar of events at the Festival Center.

What will happen to festivals?

In this unprecedented and unpredictable period, of waiting and uncertainty, while we are still committed to keeping the programme more complete than ever, we are also inevitably wondering about the future. What will happen to festivals, once the storm has passed? How can we support the cinema as a whole, from  production, to events and even the cinemas themselves? There are many topics we are wondering about…  Today, more than ever, it is important to reflect, observe with the hope of being able to write the script of the days that will come, discussing online with all the representatives of the sector and the institutions.

We exclude the possibility of a totally online edition of the Festival. The social nature of the event, which has always given priority to meeting and discussing with the directors, together with the celebrations for the festival’s 30thbirthday, are elements that cannot be given up. However, awaiting an improvement in the health situation and knowing the dates when cinemas will open again, the FESCAAAL will also adapt to the unprecedented period in which we are living, with activities and suggestions that use digital tools for its public.

Educational activities

The 2ndMiWorld Young Film Festival, the festival of cinema and interculture for schools, scheduled on the same dates as FESCAAAL, is also postponed to a date to be defined.

This is a period in which all schools are facing the great challenge of digital learning, coexisting with the uncertainty on the fate of this school year which does not allow the hypothesis of any short-term plans. The education department of the COE, however, wants to stay close to the teachers and students even in these complicated times. Thanks to the authors and distributors who have allowed putting some short films online on the COE’s Vimeo channel, suggestions of in-depth discussion on films and film literacyhave been made to supplement distance learning.

We really hope to see you soon, and no doubts, it will be beautiful!
