27th Festival of African, Asian and Latin American Cinema
“Where Future Beats”

Now in its 27th year, the Festival of African, Asian and Latin American Cinema (Milan, 19-26 March 2017) is the only festival in Italy on the films and cultures of the three continents (Africa, Asia and Latin America). In 2017 the FCAAAL summarizes its cultural offering in the claim Where Future Beats and inaugurates an important collaboration with the new space for citizens at the Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli “Feltrinelli Pasubio”. The new facilities will host the special section Restless Democracies, a journey in the transformations of Latin America and a round table “Africa, continent of the future. Universities and new entrepreneurship” in collaboration with the Fondazione Edu on start-ups, education and business in Africa.
This year again Lenovo renews its partnership with the festival and, together with Zooppa, the platform of creative contents in crowdsourcing, supports some training initiatives around the conceptof #DifferentisBetter with a special focus on women; collaboration with the LagosPhoto Festival is also renewed, which this year offers a photography exhibition of African artists inspired by the topic Where Feature Beats.

Photographic exhibition promoted by the LagosPhoto Festival and curated by Azu Nwagbogu, director of the LagosPhoto Festival and Maria Pia Bernardoni, curator of the African Artists’ Foundation. The saying goes that when you get lost you should retrace your steps to find your way home again. Africa is the place where everything began.
Today Africa is also the place to look at not only to find our origins but to better understand which direction to take. In the Western world, the interactions between human beings have been sublimated in technological innovation, but rarely can we speak of real innovation.
To understand what is really necessary to restore meaning to our actions, we have to look at those who prosper with much less at their disposal.
Africa is a continent which continues to search and reinvent its identity, finding new solutions and innovative approaches in every aspect of existence.

Lagos Photo was the first international event dedicated to visual arts and photography in Nigeria: the aim of the festival is to become the platform of reference for the promotion and education of contemporary art and photography in Africa.
60 titles (films and videos) selected, from about 600 films viewed. We will be presenting in Milan the premieres of our selection of the most recent quality cinema production from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Italy. The screenings of the films are introduced by a presentation by the director or by a film expert. All the films have Italian subtitles.
The programming, this year again, will highlight “event” films keeping a pattern with fiction films and documentaries in a single competitive section: the Windows on the World Competition for the Best Feature Film. The Special Events “Flash” section will bring together the important non-competitive premieres of the Festival. The films in competition will be judged by an international Jury made up of three experts who will award the Prize for the Best Film of the Windows on the World Feature Film Competition and by a Jury of Italian journalists who will award the Prizes for the Best African Short Film and the Best film in the Extr’A– Racism is a Nasty Story section dedicated to Italian films made in the three continents or on the topics of immigration to Italy.
Sections
Windows on the World Feature Film Competition, proposes fiction films and documentaries: an attentive selection of the latest productions from the three continents which privileges in its choices works by young directors and the cinemas from emerging countries.
Competition for African Short Films hosts the best short fiction films and documentaries from the whole of Africa and the diaspora. The section has the objective of promoting young African directors taking their first steps in the cinema and showing the new trends and experimentations in African cinema.
Extr’A– Racism is a Nasty Story Competition. Films by Italian directors or resident in Italy, made in the three continents or which deal with the topics of immigration and intercultural dialogue, created with the aim of relating an Italy which interprets cultural diversity.
FLASH proposes the event films of the Festival: premieres of note that present the recent works by established directors, films acclaimed by the critics or that have been awarded prizes at the major international festivals, the best of contemporary cinema that relates and interprets the present of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Special Section: Restless Democracies, a Journey through the transformations of Latin America The Fondazione G. Feltrinelli and the Festival present – at the new venue of the Foundation in Viale Pasubio – a journey that will be developed over three days (22nd – 24th March) around three specific themes on the transformations affecting Latin America.
The films in competition compete for a total in prizes of euro 20,000. Great importance is given to the activities of media literacy for schools in Lombardy and the post-festival screenings in Italian cities, including an important collaboration with the Museum of Cinema in Turin.
The meeting point for guests and the public, the Festival Center (West Toll House of Porta Venezia) hosts exhibitions, meetings, workshops and moments of relaxation inspired by the cultures of Africa, Asia and Latin America. The bar of the Festival, run by the Ivory Coast restaurant Akwaba, will be in the meeting room.
The Space for Schools of the festival has morning screenings of films from the festival for middle and high schools. A student and a teacher Jury will award two prizes to the best short film.
The Space for Universities organizes in the pre-festival period meetings to promote and inform about the cinemas of the three continents thanks to the renewed cooperation with the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, the Università Statale, the Università degli Studi Milano-Bicocca and IULM. During the week of the Festival, the directors and guests of the event will meet the students. The Festival is also an opportunity for all the students who wish to take an active part in the various phases of organization.
“Dopofestival”
From the first years of the festival a priority of COE has been to take part of the event to other towns and cities in Italy, stimulating and boosting the annual activity of distributing films from emerging cinemas throughout the country. Post-festival screenings are scheduled at the Museum of the Cinema in Turin.
