| Synopsis |
| When Uli Schüppel was a child, he often listened to the stories of a family friend who had spent a long period of time in Tanzania. His stories were populated by wild animals and tribes performing mysterious rituals. When Uli was invited to make a film for the Forget Africa project and to choose an African country, he realized he did not really have any choice. He wanted to confront the fantasies from his childhood. He was immediately struck by the colour and music filling life in the capital Dar es Salaam and chose some people from the crowd, asking them to describe how they imagine a German living-room to be. The description of an ideal Germany says a lot about daily life in Tanzania today. The director also left the city to see the protagonists of the stories of his childhood. The result transcends memory and fantasy and is the representation of a feverish world of dreams. |

| He was born in Germany in 1958 and studied at the Berlin Film and TV Academy from 1984 to 1990. From 1982 he made many experimental videos in Super8 and video clips. His first short film, in 1988, revealed him to critics and the public and he won the Jury’s Special Prize at the Festival of Montreal. In 1992, his debut feature film won a prize at the Amiens Festival. Between 1994 and 1998 he made three documentaries which were shown at the Berlinale, in Rotterdam, Montreal, Edinburgh and New York. In parallel with his film-making activity, he has always been interested in music and digital technologies and makes the signature tune for the Berlinale. |
