| Synopsis |
| On a platform for fishing (a ?jermal?), in the middle of the sea of Indonesia, Johar has a group of kids working for him, bordering on slavery. One day. Jaya, who has lost his mother, arrived and is entrusted to Johar, the father he has never known? Johar rejects him from the first second and does not recognize him as his child. The claustrophobic dimension and the harsh work on the platform trigger off difficult relational dynamics amongst the youngsters, as if they were in a prison, and Jaya becomes their pet victim. For the neglected boy, there begins a cruel initiation to adult life. |

Ravi L. Bharwani
In 1990 he graduated from the Jakarta Institute of Arts. He then worked in advertising and television, but also produced documentaries and sahort films, some of which in collaboration with Garin Nugroho. His first feature film, The Rainmaker, was selected for many festivals all over the world and received the Asia New Talent Award in 2005 at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Jermal was presented in the official competition at the 2009 Rotterdam Film Festival.
Rayya Makarim
She was born in the USA in 1974 and has been a screenplay writer since 1998. Her screenplay for Jermal received the prize for the best project in Locarno in 2006 and so obtained funding for the production of the film. She has also planned and organized screenings and debates. |
